COLBY, Kan. – (April 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; May 7, 2020)

USD #315 Colby Public Schools and LiveWell Northwest Kansas have partnered to offer free parenting classes in Colby. The “Strong Families, Strong Leaders” program consists of six sessions every Thursday evening, 5:30 to 8 p.m., April 2 to May 7, at the Colby Elementary School, 210 N. Grant Ave.

Parents, custodial guardians and any child caregiver from within the school district our outside can attend. Registration includes a meal, a seat, and childcare for the evening. Additionally, those who complete all six sessions are eligible for a completion stipend.

“We’re very excited for the opportunity to partner with Colby schools to offer this free program, which focuses on a nurturing parenting philosophy,” explains Maureen Ostmeyer, Director of Early Education and Childcare at LiveWell in Colby. “We’ve learned that parents are children’s first teachers. Parents set family standards for successful, healthy lives and their actions have a tremendous effect on the brain development of their children in the early years of life.

“By imprinting the lessons of nurturing care into the daily lives and regular actions of parents, we can effectively strengthen the family dynamic and help children lead successful and healthy lives. This, in turn, has a powerful effect on our community and our economy.”

Funded by the Kansas Children’s Cabinet and Trust Fund through the Early Childhood Block Grant, this program follows Blueprint for Early Childhood outcomes and standards which focuses on healthy development, strong families and strong learning.
