Elle Beringer, age 10, poses in front of a mountain of diapers and wipes at Nesting in downtown Colby in preparation for a free diaper distribution being offered to families of northwest Kansas. Elle helped her mom unload, unbox, and receive an entire pallet of chemical free, premium disposable diapers ranging in Size 1 to Size 6 and 168 packs of wipes, supplied by Nurture Diapers. Elle said, "I hope we can help lots of people who need diapers for their babies.

Colby, KS — LiveWell Northwest Kansas’ Family Resource Center (FRC) is launching a new diaper and wipe distribution initiative to help alleviate financial strain and meet essential needs for young children across northwest Kansas. Through this effort, the center will provide one package of diapers and two packs of wipes per child to 84 local families, ensuring that more children have access to the basic necessities that support their health and well being.

“This is one small way we can help,” said Cheyenne Schnider, Program Director at LiveWell Northwest Kansas. “It’s hard to get resources in northwest Kansas. There are limited services and many rural families are experiencing hardships. These struggles can impact a child’s health, well-being, and development while also creating financial strain on families. We see these needs every and we strive to do what we can for our local community.”

Distribution will be hosted at Nesting, a boutique located in downtown Colby at 400 N. Franklin Ave. People can pick up diapers and wipes during Nesting’s normal business hours: Wednesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Supplies are available first-come, first-served, while supplies last. And, families can choose the size of diapers they need.

There are no income restrictions, no paperwork, no proof of financial eligibility, stressed Schnider. Any family with a child in diapers can participate. Information about the Family Resource Center and other local resources will be available in English and Spanish, too.

“Through partnerships and collaborations, LiveWell supports local families,” added Schnider.

Her sentiment is backed by LiveWell Director Travis Rickford, who said, “we’re grateful for support from the Kansas Department of Children and Families for supporting the Family Resource Center grant initiative. By working together, we’re creating a stronger network of support and security for local families experiencing hardships.

“We also want to thank Christina Beringer, owner of Nesting, for offering her downtown business as the pickup location. Nesting is a warm, welcoming place where families can connect not only with supplies but with other maternal health resources in the area.”

Nesting, a locally owned boutique specializing in maternity and baby needs, has been a trusted resource for families since 2016.

“Nesting has always been about supporting moms and families,” said Beringer. “We are proud to be a part of this program because it represents more than just diapers, it’s about lifting real and tangible barriers to health and well-being. And, I’m happy to help LiveWell make access to free diapers and wipes as easy as possible, while also connecting families with free resources available right here in our community, like the services provided by LiveWell’s Family Resource Center.”

Established in 2023, the Family Resource Center is now one of only ten designated centers across Kansas. The center offers support for parenting and leadership, behavioral health services, financial stability resources, insurance marketplace consultation, and more to families in Cheyenne, Rawlins, Decatur, Norton, Sherman, Thomas, Sheridan, Graham, Wallace, Logan, Gove and Trego counties.

In its first year, the FRC distributed more than 500 household items to families throughout northwest Kansas including diapers, wipes, bed sheets, pillows and other essentials.

LiveWell Northwest Kansas has been a trusted community resource for over 40 years advocating for health and early childhood care. Programs also include Kids Port group childcare, support for the Thomas County Coalition, the Thomas County Farmers Market, and Copeland Community Garden.
