Thomas County Coalition Promotes Stronger Families Through Parenting Education

Colby, Kan. – The Thomas County Coalition remains dedicated to fostering a healthier community in Colby and Thomas County, Kansas, by connecting residents with valuable resources and launching initiatives that promote well-being. A key part of this mission includes supporting families in raising confident, independent, and healthy children.

To further this goal, Thomas County Coalition Coordinator Christina Beringer is participating in a five-week online training course called Guiding Good Choices, sponsored by DCCCA, a nonprofit organization that regularly partners with the Coalition on community health initiatives. This evidence-based program is designed for parents of youth ages 9-14, equipping them with skills to strengthen family bonds, improve communication, and support their children in making positive life choices.

“Parents can make a big difference in their kids' lives,” said Deanne Armstrong, a DCCCA workshop facilitator. “Guiding Good Choices is all about giving parents the tools to set clear expectations, reinforce healthy behaviors, and provide the support kids need to navigate challenges.”

The program is backed by extensive research from the University of Washington and has been shown to:

  • Reduce alcohol and marijuana use by 41%

  • Decrease the risk of serious substance misuse by 54%

  • Increase the likelihood that non-users will remain drug-free by 26%

  • Reduce symptoms of depression by 28% through the end of high school

Parents who participate in the program learn how to manage family conflicts effectively, encourage independence while maintaining strong relationships, and foster an environment where children feel supported and confident. One of the most impactful sessions includes strategies for helping children say "no" to peer pressure while maintaining friendships and staying socially engaged.

Beringer, a mother of three, is eager to implement the knowledge she gains—not only in her own parenting but also in her work with the community. “I'm excited to learn new strategies that will help my children grow into confident, happy, and thriving individuals,” said Beringer. “I also look forward to sharing these insights with my friends, family and local organizations that support families.”

The Thomas County Coalition encourages parents and caregivers in the community to take advantage of resources like Guiding Good Choices to build stronger family connections and create a positive impact on youth.
